THE “DOG FIGHT” SERIES
In the spring of 1940 the invasion Britain was imminent. Only control of the skies over of southern England stood in the way of Germany’s troops, assembled in the French ports, awaiting the signal. The outcome of the desperate air battles between the pilots of the RAF and Luftwaffe would determine Hitler’s next move.
The Battle of Britain raged above England’s southern counties throughout the long hot summer months while Britain held its breath. The outcome would be decisive. And as history records… it was! But it took the Allies another 5 years of fiercely contested air fighting to gain control of the skies right across Europe.
After the war General Adolf Galland, who led one of the Luftwaffe’s crack fighter units throughout the battle, and again in the final Defence of the Reich, had this to say:
“Like all good fighter pilots, the RAF were aggressive and never gave up. I respected them then, and admire them to this day. The friendships I now have with Sir Douglas Bader, Bob Stanford-Tuck, and many others with whom we Luftwaffe pilots fought during the Battle over Britain is testimony to the spirit of the fighter pilot. We flew because we loved to fly. We fought because it was our duty. Now we are friends. What does that tell you about war!”
